Send Money to India with Peanut — Coming Soon
Peanut is expanding to India. Soon you will be able to send money to anyone in India and have them spend locally using UPI — the world's largest real-time payment system, processing approximately 17 billion transactions per month. The recipient will not need an Aadhaar number or an Indian bank account tied to Peanut to receive and spend money. Just a passport and the Peanut app.
India is the world's largest remittance market, receiving approximately $125 billion per year. The United States, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom are the top three source countries. Traditional services charge 2-5% in combined fees and exchange rate markups on these corridors. Peanut is building a direct path from your dollars to Indian rupees — through the same local payment infrastructure Indians already use.
Why Peanut Will Be the Best Way to Send Money to India
No Fees
Peanut charges nothing on deposits, transfers, or spending. That model will carry over to India. Whether you fund your account via ACH from a US bank, SEPA from a European bank, or digital dollars from an exchange, the deposit is free. Sending to the recipient is free. Spending in India via UPI will be free. Here is what the alternatives currently charge:
- Wise: 0.4-1.5% in additional charges on every transfer
- PayPal: 3-4% cross-border fee, plus an unfavorable exchange rate markup
- Western Union: $5-$15+ flat fee per transfer, plus a 2-5% rate markup built into the rate
For families receiving monthly remittances, those fees compound quickly. A $500 monthly transfer through traditional channels could cost $25-$50+ per month in fees alone.
Better Exchange Rate
Peanut's exchange rate model converts digital dollars directly to local currency at the market rate. The Indian rupee operates under a managed float regime controlled by the Reserve Bank of India. While the exact rate mechanism for INR is being finalized, the approach is the same one that already delivers significant savings in other markets.
Instant Local Spending
Once Peanut launches in India, recipients will be able to spend immediately using UPI. UPI QR codes are accepted at virtually every merchant in India — from street vendors to malls. Instead of waiting days for an international bank transfer to clear, the recipient will open the Peanut app and scan a UPI QR code. The payment arrives in seconds, not days.
No Local ID Required
Info
UPI normally requires an Indian bank account linked to an Indian mobile number, and opening a bank account requires Aadhaar. Foreigners cannot obtain Aadhaar without long-term residency. Peanut will bypass that requirement entirely — recipients verify with any passport or national ID card.
How It Will Work
- 1
Sign up and verify your identity
Create a Peanut account and complete identity verification. Submit a photo of your passport or national ID card plus a selfie — the process takes under 2 minutes for most users. No Aadhaar required.
- 2
Deposit funds
Fund your account using the method that fits your location. US users will deposit via ACH (free, 1-3 business days) or send digital dollars from an exchange. European users will use SEPA bank transfer (free, 90% under 20 minutes). Anyone can send USDC, USDT, or DAI on Solana, Arbitrum, Base, Tron, Avalanche, Polygon, or Ethereum — all deposits are free and arrive in minutes.
- 3
Send to the recipient
The recipient creates their own Peanut account and verifies with a passport or national ID card. Send them money directly — Peanut-to-Peanut transfers arrive instantly.
- 4
Recipient spends locally via UPI
The recipient opens the Peanut app and scans UPI QR codes at merchants across India. UPI payments settle in seconds. The recipient can also withdraw to a local bank account.
What the Recipient Will Be Able to Do
UPI Payments
UPI is India's national real-time payment system, operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). With approximately 17 billion transactions per month and over 350 million active users, UPI QR codes are accepted at virtually every merchant — grocery stores, restaurants, auto-rickshaws, street vendors, and online retailers.
When Peanut integrates UPI, recipients will be able to scan QR codes at merchants nationwide. Popular UPI apps include Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM. The system operates 24/7/365 with near-instant settlement.
Bank Withdrawal
Recipients will also be able to withdraw their Peanut balance to a local Indian bank account for rent, bills, and other recurring payments.
Digital Dollar Withdrawal
Recipients who prefer to hold digital dollars can withdraw USDC, USDT, or DAI to any external wallet on supported networks. This is available today — even before the India spending integration launches.
Key Corridors
Send Money from the United States to India
The US-to-India corridor is one of the world's busiest remittance routes. Workers in the US send money home to family in India regularly. When Peanut launches, US-based senders will deposit via ACH (free, 1-3 business days) or digital dollars (free, arrives in minutes). The recipient in India will spend immediately via UPI — no visiting a Western Union branch, no waiting days for a bank transfer.
Send Money from the United Kingdom to India
UK senders can deposit via SEPA if they hold a euro-denominated account (free, 90% under 20 minutes). For GBP-denominated accounts, the fastest path is sending digital dollars from a UK exchange on Solana or Arbitrum — deposits arrive in minutes.
Send Money from the UAE to India
The UAE-to-India corridor is one of the largest remittance flows globally. Workers in the UAE send money home to families across India. When Peanut launches, UAE-based senders will deposit digital dollars from a local exchange — free and arriving in minutes.
